Strange Development's Front Control Arm Bushings

Looking for some new bushings for your S197 Mustang? Want the best there is to hit those corners hard and not have to worry about them giving out? Well your search is over.

Strange development's engineers developed a nylon bushing that would eliminate unwanted bushing deflection. MDS filled nylon 6/6 was the material of choice since it can take more load than delrin and will provide a maintenance free operation. MDS (Molybdenum Disulfide) is similar to graphite and is self lubricating.

Each MDS filled bushing rides on a 316 stainless steel inner race. This bushing is truly innovative since it provides the rigidity superior to urethane or delrin and doesn’t require the maintenance. Bushings will increase noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) and are therefore only recommended for performance vehicles and for the performance oriented driver.

Don't crap when you hit the check out button, it's a whopping 410. WHAT you say. Yep if you want the best you gotta pay.

Strange Development's Strut Tower Brace

Looking to tie up some of that slack in your S197 Mustang? Well pick up yourself a new strut tower brace from Strange Development.

Our engineers developed a strut tower brace made from an aircraft aluminum alloy that makes your chassis stiff without adding unneeded weight. Our strut tower brace is three times lighter than a conventional brace weighing in at 1.6lbs (26.3oz).

The handling benefits of strut tower braces are enormous and until now the additional performance was worth the additional weight. You no longer have to compromise!

Additional weight decreases acceleration, increases stopping distance, and hurts handling characteristics. The engineers at Strange Development know that every ounce counts especially when it comes to racing.

Your choice of either satin aluminum for $195 or for the polished aluminum at $238

Adobe InDesign CS2 Tip – Out-of-the-Box Thinking with Type

Have you been wanting to make a curved type line in InDesign CS2 but wondered how you go about it like you do in Quark Express? Well your search is over.
If you use the Type tool to draw a Text Frame, the Frame will be a rectangle. And other than the Type on a Path tool, there are no other Type tools. This is very much different than QuarkXPress™ which has six additional Text Box creation tools. So is this an area that InDesign falls short of Quark™?

Not at all! Because there are two ways in InDesign, to turn any other object into a Type Frame (as long as that object doesn’t contain an image). You can select the object and go to the Object menu> Content and choose Text. Or you can click on the object (whether it is selected or not) with your Type tool and the object will turn into a Text Frame. So if you want a curvy organic shape drawn with the Pen tool to contain text, go right ahead. Just click and type with your Type tool.

Pre-Painted Parts From Roush

07-05-06 -Roush Performance: We like instant gratification in the United States. Why cook your own food when you can pop it in the microwave and be eating a couple of minutes later? The same thing applies with our vehicles; we want to have a car as unique as our own personality, but don't want to wait for the results.

With the introduction of their new line of painted parts for both the Ford Mustang and F-150 truck, ROUSH Performance is offering a quick and easy way to turn your stock ride into a custom vehicle. No longer does the end-user need to worry about buying body kit components, sanding them to fit properly, finding a paint shop to have them sprayed, and then worrying about the color matching your car correctly.

ROUSH Performance body kits are made in America in using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. Most of the ROUSH body kit components are constructed from high-pressure, injection-molded TPO or ABS plastic which means that the components will retain their correct shape and not sag or warp over the life of the vehicle.

ROUSH Performance takes all the prep work out of adding a body kit to your car or truck. The parts are polished and prepped correctly, and then pre-painted in the stock Ford colors ready to install the moment they arrive.

Parts for the 2005-2006 Ford Mustang include a hood scoop, rear quarter window louvers and a rear wing. Each piece is colored to perfectly match your vehicle and engineered for the best fit and finish in the aftermarket. One thing that makes the ROUSH quarter window louvers unique is that they can be removed for cleaning the glass underneath. Most others are installed with double-sided tape; the ROUSH louver uses brackets and bolts that can be unscrewed to take them off temporarily. This might not seem like a big deal, but the glass underneath can get pretty grimy after time and nobody wants to look at that accumulation from inside the vehicle.

For the F-150, you can choose from a ROUSH hood scoop, rear wing spoiler and front chin spoiler. Mix and match to create a truck that will turn heads as you drive by, and rest assured that each is painted to perfectly match the Ford stock color on your 2004-2006 F-150. Many of these parts were designed by the same engineers that work on the ROUSH NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series programs, experts in their field with an intimate knowledge of the Ford pickup line. These parts are the easiest way to make your F-150, the best selling pickup in history, stand out from the others.

All the ROUSH painted parts come with step-by-step instructions and life-sized templates for trouble-free installation. Most components use existing bolt or screw locations to minimize additional drilling into the vehicle. More information on the full line of painted parts can be found online at www.RoushPerformance.com or by dialing (800) 59-ROUSH.

New Roush 550RC F150

LIVONIA, Mich. (July 17, 2006) – ROUSH Performance, long known for adding power and performance to the Ford F-150 has just released the newest version in their vehicle line, the ROUSH 500RC which adds big-time pickup to a pickup truck.

Now in production and available at dealers nationwide, the ROUSH 500RC is a true road runner thanks to the ground pounding 445 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque generated by the addition of a ROUSHchargerTM system. Additional ROUSH treatments include a dual rear exit high-performance exhaust system, 20-inch chrome wheels and tires, and a billet aluminum grille. Completing the styling and proving the heritage of the truck is the unique ROUSH 500RC fender and tailgate badging, top and side stripe kit, and the serial badge in the engine compartment. Born from ROUSH Racing’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series program, the ROUSH 500RC is a perfect example of what lies between a race truck and a regular truck – a ROUSH truck.

A variety of options are available, including the stylish ROUSH hood scoop, rear wing, front chin spoiler, sport suspension system, sport leather seating, billet aluminum pedals and performance instrument cluster. Complete details can be found online at www.RoushPerformance.com.

Hide Your Mac OSX Menu-Bar

Menufela is a application that let's you hide away the menubar and/or get rid of the spotlight menu item.

What's menufela?
Menufela is an delicious piece of code that hides your menubar, giving you back those pixels you've never been able to put to use before.

Why do I want menufela?
Probably because it gives you extra space (it may not look like much, but it matters) and it looks so cool.. so minimalistic.
also if you're like me and don't use the spotlight menu item enough to justify the space it takes up in your menubar, menufela lets you get rid of it.

Come on, just list what it does!

It "auto hides" the menubar, just like when you hide your dock it pops out when you move the mouse to the edge of the screen.
You can set a hotkey to show/hide the menubar so if you don't want the menubar to be hidden all the time you can just set any key combo to toggle menufela. This is very comfortable if you just want to get rid of the menubar when working in a couple of applications (the extra space does wonders when working in Final Cut or Photoshop)
It also let's you hide away that spotlight icon you replaced with Quicksilver ages ago

UPS Uses Software To Create Right-Turn Only Routes To Conserve Fuel

You wouldn't think of something as benign as avoiding a left-hand turn could conserve fuel, but Atlanta-based United Parcel Service (UPS) swears by it. In fact, the parcel carrier has technology in its systems that help map this out routes that minimize the number of left turns the driver has to make.

According to spokesperson Steve Holmes, avoiding left turns at intersections reduces idling which in turn lowers fuel consumption. "It seems small, but when you multiply it across 88,0000 vehicles making nearly 15 million deliveries every day during the course of a year, it adds up."

And at stop lights, making a right turn at an intersection tends to be faster than at a left turn, since you have only to wait for an opportunity to turn in one lane of traffic. You also have the option of "right on red" in most jurisdictions, unless otherwise indicated by traffic signs. "So even if you didn't save fuel, you're going to move more quickly through a route."

"Because 98% of our packages are processed electronically by shippers, we know what's entering our system each day, what's still in our system each day, when each package is going to arrive at a center, when the package is scheduled for delivery -- including time of day -- and where it will be delivered," Holmes says.

What's more, Holmes says, UPS drivers are trained to always turn off their package cars when they stop for a delivery, never idling at the curb or in a driveway. "Even if the driver is out of the truck for a few seconds, the vehicle is always turned off."

Apple's Mac Pro To Sport Modified Power Mac Enclosure

Contrary to published reports, Apple Computer does not plan to introduce new enclosures alongside its first Intel-based Mac Pro desktops and will instead employ only slightly modified Power Mac G5 casings, AppleInsider has learned.

The current Power Mac G5 enclosure -- first detailed by AppleInsider back in June of 2003 -- is believed to be well suited for Apple's first Intel-based professional desktops due to the similarities in size and shape between the new Mac Pro logic-board and the one presently shipping in the Power Mac G5.

People familiar with plans for the next-generation Apple desktops say there appear to be only a couple of cosmetic differences between the Mac Pro and Power Mac G5 casings, specifically the addition of a second optical disc drive slot on the face of the Mac Pro.

Firefox Anti-Phishing Features Score Points

Mozilla's new Firefox 2.0 beta release is now available for download.
The latest version of the popular alternative to the Internet Explorer
browser includes anti-phishing features to protect users from being
tricked by fake Web sites.

Mozilla's beta version of Firefox 2.0 is drawing applause from reviewers for its new anti-phishing features, which are likely to become increasingly important in consumers' constant battle against data theft.

The built-in phishing protection in the latest version, which debuted Wednesday, warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries and offers to return to their home pages. Phishing Protection is turned on by default and works by checking sites that users browse against a local list of known phishing sites, according to Mozilla.

One Step Ahead

The severity of phishing is something that hit Joe Wilcox, senior analyst for JupiterResearch, on a personal level, he told LinuxInsider.

Wilcox received a message from a bank indicating that someone had accessed his account through an IP address that was not connected to his home address. He knew the e-mail was not genuine because he does not have an account with that particular bank. However, when he traced the message back to a Web site in Russia, he found, to his alarm, that it had his true home address.

"It's an example of how savvy criminals are becoming, and it means anti-phishing technology has to stay ahead of it," he said. "You assume [the bank] has your home address, you click the link, give the information, and you're dead. But if you have anti-phishing technology built into the browser -- even when the customer is fooled by a highly sophisticated attack, [the system provides protection]."

Waiting Game

Most Firefox fans will have to wait before taking advantage of the new security measures and other features included in the latest version, however.

"At this time we are using a limited list to test the core Phishing Protection framework within the browser, but the list is expected to grow as people use the feature and report new Web forgeries," the company said. "Firefox 2 Beta 1 is intended for Web application developers and our testing community [only]. Current users of Mozilla Firefox 1.x should not use [it]." Final release is scheduled for August.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) third beta version of Internet Explorer 7.0, which it released on June 29, also provides a phishing filter, along with a security status bar, address protection bar and URL handling security.

"We respect that customers have a choice of browsers on Windows," Jim Hahn, product manager, Windows Client Division at Microsoft, told LinuxInsider. "Our goal is to make Internet Explorer the best and most secure choice available."

Netscape also has strong anti-phishing tools, Wilcox noted.

Plethora of Offerings

The security feature was only one of several new Firefox options in Wednesday's beta release. Some other enhancements include the following:

Automatic restoration of a browsing session -- When a system or browser crashes, the Session Restore restarts where the user left off. It also enables users to reopen tabs and windows that were closed in a browsing session.
New micro-summaries feature for bookmarks -- Micro-summaries are compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated as new information becomes available, according to Mozilla. For example, the micro-summary for a Web page on an auction item might display the item name, current highest bid, and time remaining: "Honda Accord - US$5000 - 1 minute left".
Inline spell checking --This tool enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web text fields without having to use another application.
Combined, these features support Mozilla's strong push into the global market, said Carol Baroudi, partner at Hurwitz and Associates, noting that downloads of the beta version are available in more than two dozen languages.

"It speaks to their potential. It's a very strong offering with a bigger and bigger following," Baroudi told LinuxInsider. "It's the best alternative [to IE], and we'll see an uptake. Maybe Mozilla will be a platform of choice for developers."

50 Terabyte Organic Discs On The Horizon, Maybe

What's that you say? A 50 Terabyte USB/DVD? Well a professor and some backing from NEC have figured out how to get great size normally not thought possible.

Are we on the brink of a data storage revolution? Professor Venkatesan Renugopalakrishnan would like to think so, because he has developed a medium that should allow 50 TB of data stored on a DVD-sized disc. His research team, in cooperation with Japanese electronics giant NEC, has developed a prototype disc covered in a modified form of bacteriorhodopsin proteins.

The protein can absorb light, turning the photoelectric energy into chemical energy by modifying its structure. Normally, it's sort of an alternative to chlorophylls, found in archaeabacteria like salt marsh microbe Halobacterium Salinarum, and the stored energy is released fairly quickly to fuel that organism's day-to-day activities. Renu's form of the molecule is supposed to retain its charge, and therefore its modified structure, "for years," making it suitable for data storage. The changes also make the protein resistant to high temperatures.

Discs coated in the material are read with a fairly standard DVD-style laser pickup, though it's unclear at exactly what wavelength it would operate. A standard DVD player reads the disc with a 650 nm laser, while Blu-ray and HD DVD both go for 405 nm, and the conventional wisdom is that shorter wavelengths give you finer resolution and the ability to pack data in more tightly. 568 nm is the wavelength of maximum absorption capacity for bacteriorhodopsin, but that would place the capacity below that of today's high-definition discs.

According to our resident biochemistry expert John Timmer, there are three challenges to overcome before making storage media out of bacteriorhodopsin. The first is to pack the surface of the medium tightly enough, because the protein is normally stuck in a membrane with bits of membrane in between the proteins. Second, retard the efficiency of the normal energy release to ensure that the data will still be there when you want to read it. Third, if you need the media to be rewritable—and the product is intended to compete with hard drives—you'd need to come up with some method to control the movement between the protein's various transitional states.

The team estimates that they will have a USB disk on the market in 12 months, and a DVD product 6 to 12 months after that. With a partner like NEC on board, all of that is possible, assuming that the technical challenges have been met already. But the idea has been under development for a long time; back in 2003, Renu was aiming for no more than 200 GB capacity but thought that the product was about one year away from hitting the market. It's probably a good thing that didn't happen, considering the unfortunate name chosen at the time: Tsunami 2004.

Bigger and faster disks are always welcome, of course, and this does sound like a promising (if mildly disturbing in its organic makeup) technology. But Renu still needs to show us an actual product—all we have so far is the promise of a prototype, and no real-world demonstrations. Assuming the thing doesn't cost thousands of dollars when it finally does hit the shelves, and that it doesn't turn into the Duke Nukem Forever of storage technologies, I for one welcome our new data handling overlords.

iPhone, iPod Messenger Clues In Latest iPod Software

An AppleInsider member by the name of VL-Tone recently dissected the latest iPod firmware update and made some interesting discoveries.

While Apple has been relatively mum on any plans for iPod-branded cell phone, the latest iPod software includes references to an "t_feature_app_PHONE_APP" application and variables such as "kPhoneSignalStrength," "clPhoneCallHistoryModel," prPhoneSettingsMenu," "prPhoneSettingsMenuView," prPhoneEnableSetting" and "prPhoneMenuItem."

The phone references within the iPod software are unlikely in relation to Motorola's iTunes Music phones because those phones do not run the iPod operating system, the member pointed out in his analysis. The references also appear to be unrelated Apple's address book synching.

In potentially related news, a European Apple design filing discovered earlier this month revealed several iPod concept designs, including one that appeared to blend an iPod nano with a cell phone.

Apple may also be working on some form of iPod-based instant messenger application, if you believe in reading into some additional clues embedded into the latest iPod software such as "t_feature_app_MESSENGER_APP," "clMessengerModel," and "clMessengerApplication."

In his investigation, VL-Tone also discovered references to an iPod-based search application, an iPod keyboard, and what appear to be two new game applications: Simon and Stacker.

Intel Replacement For The Powermac G5 Speculations

Although the iMac started the Intel Mac parade at Macworld San Francisco in January, Yonah wasn't such a clear-cut choice. If it wasn't for the fact that Apple wanted to have its most recognizable computer leading the charge into x86 territory, the iMac could have waited for a more desktop-centric processor, like Conroe (the Core 2 Duo). As it stands, Apple decided to put all of its chips in Yonah's basket for the first half-year of its post-Power PC life. But there is still one part of the product matrix stuck in Power PC: the pro desktops. (Yes, the Xserve is still running a PowerPC 970, but it's going to get Intel's server CPU, Woodcrest.)

There are a couple of ways to approach the question of what Apple's upcoming pro desktops might look like. The first is to look at Intel's CPU lineup and see what fits logically and where. The second is understanding what Apple has done historically with its machines and try and extrapolate that to an all-new architecture.
Let's do both.

How To Install VMware Server On Ubuntu 6.06

This Great tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to install the free VMware Server (version 1.0) on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake).

VMware has just released version 1.0 of its free VMware Server. With VMware Server you can create and run guest operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, etc. under a host operating system. This has the benefit that you can run multiple operating systems on the same hardware which saves a lot of money, and you can move virtual machines from one VMware Server to the next one (or to a system that has the VMware Player which is also free). In this article we use Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake) as the host operating system.
